Local Information for Guests

Seaham Bed and Breakfast - Tuesday, December 02, 2014

Behind Waterloo place is an area now called The Park District which is in fact reclaimed land, having originally been called the backwater.  It was an area of open shallow fresh water where the river Wey broadened before emptying into the sea. It is believed that the water would have come as far up as the stone walls that can still be seen to the rear of the Terrace. The area was drained in the early Victorian period and was originally planned to be a Municipal park however the land was eventually used for housing for the railway workers when the line reached Weymouth.

The history of Weymouth can be dated back to long before the Roman era and it has been through some turbulent times, originally 2 separate towns of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis, they were merged to become what we call Weymouth today.

Weymouth’s popularity as a seaside resort is attributed to King George 111 who came to bathe in the sea as a cure for his nervous disorder, and is just one of the reasons it is so popular today, with its wide sweep of sandy beach and safe bathing. There is also much to do and explore in the local area.
